Stimulate Referrals
and Fill More Jobs

Sometimes recruiters obsess so much over the science of recruiting-the "where to look"-that we tend to ignore the true art of the business, the "how to ask." These days, it seems we've all turned into info-junkies, addicted to databases, directories and Internet research.

Which is fine. Candidates don't fall out of the sky, they have to be found. And given the Internet's exotic allure of an unlimited supply of highly skilled candidates, what recruiter wouldn't be tempted to compile a list of 100 names before even having to pick up the phone?

Unfortunately, the mountain of evidence approach to recruiting threatens to become an end unto itself, as we increasingly rely on raw data, rather than strong relationships as the best source of qualified candidates. Today's recruiter frequently squanders resources already available by failing to leverage relationships into referrals.

Are You Good News?

This month, we reprint one of Craig's more memorable blogs from his gig as Career Coach on iLifeCoach.com.

When people are out looking for work they can sometimes get down on themselves. Being a positive influence on others can help you to project a presence that others want to be around. Give yourself every opportunity to turn the relationships you have and your network into your next career move.

An enthusiastic person typically has some good news, a warm greeting, a funny story, an optimistic prediction. It's a joy to see them coming your way. They are "good news!" They bring a smile to your face.

Are you "good news?" Were you good news to the last hiring manager you met or the person you bumped into who was down on their luck? Are you "good news" by your attitude, your speech, your optimism, your life?

Someone you will meet today will need a little bit of sunshine. Someone you meet today may not have just closed that big deal they were expecting, or had an interview they were counting on get canceled.

To be "good news" to someone is a privilege and a responsibility. Be the person who takes an extra step to be "good news" to somebody each day. What goes around, comes around.

Dear Miss J:

You know what? This recruiting malarkey is not easy is it? I thought I had it all worked out: I would make my millions easily, sitting by the pool with my state-of-the-art wireless lap top, sipping Cosmos with top notch candidates calling me (when they can actually get through - clients calling and all). I would retire by 30, own a house on the beach and just generally have a good time (and I would still be fighting the clients off with a stick - a BIG stick).

Ka-thump !%$@# Hear that? That was I, coming down to earth. Not a good looking landing either! Flat on my "chair warmer" with legs akimbo, arms flailing, mouth agape, and eyes wide open and wild looking.

This all brings to mind that phrase "Mother told me there would be days like this". First, why didn't she say there would be jobs like this, and second, why did I not listen to "She Who Knows Everything And When Proven Right, Rubs My Nose In It In Public"?

I have so much to do! The business development, the recruiting, the admin, and all the calls about issues I need to solve. It just goes on and on and on into infinity.

I feel so stressed I could go drink Cosmos right from the bottle.

Miss J, I need help!

Dear Dreamer from Pleasant Hope, MO:

OK, take a deep breath. Now sit down and take another deep breath. Feel a little bit better already?

While you are taking those deep breaths, why don't you try this great little breathing trick I learned in yoga class...
