The Vendor List Objection
Danny Cahill is the only industry "guru" that runs
a search firm every day. In July of 2002 Danny
launched www.AccordingToDanny.com, a new
website devoted to owners, managers and recruiters,
enabling them to have direct access to his
guidance "24/7".

In this issue, a recruiter asks how to get on those
pesky "vendor lists".
Hi Danny,
I am finding more and more that companies are
forming vendor lists. Is there any formula to secure
getting on these lists?
Danny's Response
The short answer is, if there is a formula for getting
on vendor lists - I’m not on the list to get the
formula! Vendor lists are another piece of the
intricate labyrinth that Human Resources people
create to keep recruiters a) under control and b) out
of the company. “You aren’t on our vendor list” is
just another objection, so here’s what you need to
do. Go higher in the organization. When you are
marketing, call as high as humanly possible. You will
be surprised at how many return calls you get and
how much information the people that are driving the
organization will give you. Make sure that you
prepare for these calls. You only have one shot

Recruiting Entrances
The labor market is inundated with resumes and job
applicants. Adding to those throngs is the number
of so-called “passive” job candidates: those who are
employed but willing to make a change, and doing at
least preliminary interviewing if an attractive
opportunity arises. In other words, the applicants
and are out there. If you announce your
open positions, no doubt you'll wind up with a very
large pool of candidates. It will then be a matter of
finding the ones who are best qualified in order to
determine whom to interview.

Ask Miss J -- Fun & Advice

recruitment questions and problems to her!
The leaves are falling as Miss J walks around her New
England estate, picking the last blooms of the
summer and making a mental note to inform Soames,
the gardener, to start raking the already
accumulating leaves.
Returning to the summerhouse and her cup of
Lapsang souchong tea, she starts to look through
the many letters that she receives daily, asking for
her advice. Sweeping the rose petals from the
papers she was working on, a note (sun bleached
and smelling slightly of cows) caught her eye…
Yee Haw, Miss J!
Can you help me? Talk about Fall, I feel like my
leaves are dropping, leaving me naked and vulnerable
(from a recruiting standpoint, that is). In spring I
felt like a verdant sapling, all strong and ready for
anything. Summer came and I have been so busy I
don’t know how I got through it all. I am beginning
to wilt, bigtime. I feel that I have a nasty case of
green fly. The reason for my horticultural decline is
that I am now left with a pile of paper, and I’m not
sure if my innovative and creative work practices are
getting me where I want go. Of course, by
innovative and creative, I mean going from knee jerk
to chaos!
Miss J, how do I use this time to get back on track
and regain those lost acorns (marbles!)?
Letty of Oak Leaf, TX
Well, Letty of Leaf,
Fall is a good time to tidy up, plan for the months
ahead, and set up for Q1. It is a perfect time for
putting everything in its place (which is what I do
with Lord B at this time of year. He is prone to
ramble and get into all sorts of autumnal mischief!).
So let’s look back: the beginning of the summer was
crazy, with loads of reqs, and you were recruiting
until your eyes crossed! August slowed down,
req-wise, which made the recruiting…
